A five-hundred-year-old barn, its beams glowing with soft light and its brick walls holding out the cold, is very hard to beat.

And practically speaking, our sixteenth-century barn has central heating, so your guests stay cosy from the first drink to the last dance.

Ideas to make it feel like winter

If you would like a little inspiration, here are some touches that suit the barn and the season beautifully.

Candlelight, everywhere. Nothing flatters old timber and brick like a warm flame. Cluster pillar candles down the centre of the tables, line the windowsills with tea lights, and let the room glow rather than glare. Battery candles are a sensible choice where a naked flame is not ideal, and they look just as pretty.

A deep, seasonal palette. Winter loves richer colour. Think forest and eucalyptus greens, deep berry reds, plum, and touches of gold or brass against ivory and cream. It photographs beautifully against the brick and looks effortlessly elegant.

Foliage over flowers. In the colder months, evergreen and winter foliage do a lot of the heavy lifting: eucalyptus, ivy, pine, holly, and dried grasses and seed heads. Our small modern kitchen gives your caterer a proper base to work from, with a fridge, wine cooler, oven, hob and more.

Lighting that lingers. Beyond candles, a canopy of warm fairy lights or a string of festoon bulbs against the beams turns the whole room golden as the evening comes in. It is the simplest way to make a winter barn feel like a warm embrace.

A little of the outdoors, gently. The Tudor garden and the countryside setting look wonderful under a clear winter sky, perfect for a few photographs wrapped up warm, before everyone heads back inside to the candlelight.

The practical reassurance

A beautiful day also needs to run smoothly, and the barn is set up to help. It comfortably seats up to ninety guests at tables, and up to around a hundred with additional seating, so it suits an intimate winter wedding perfectly. There is central heating to keep everyone warm, disabled access and facilities, and the barn sits just outside York with easy access and a train station a short walk away, so guests can reach you without a long journey on a dark evening.

Perhaps best of all, you will not be doing it alone. An experienced trustee volunteer will meet with you beforehand and help coordinate the arrangements, so you can plan your day with a friendly, knowledgeable hand to guide you.
