Fresh-pressed apple juice, tea and cake, tombolas and games: Poppleton Scouts’ much-loved community day.
Every autumn, Poppleton Scouts celebrate Apple Day on the Millennium Green, right beside the barn. The fruit trees there were planted as a reminder of the orchards that once defined Poppleton’s farming past, and each year the Scouts bring them back to life.
They gather the apples straight from the orchard, then crank them through traditional hand presses to make fresh apple juice. It is sticky, hands-on work, and everyone is welcome to have a go.
Around the presses there is tea and cake, tombolas, fun and games for all ages: a great community day that the village looks forward to every year.
“A cherished local tradition that brings the village together.”
The Millennium Green
An orchard with a story
In the late 1990s Poppleton became one of the UK’s 500 Millennium Greens, and fruit trees were planted to remember the village’s orchards. Among them stand four metal sculptures by artist Steve Blaylock.
Apple Day keeps that link to Poppleton’s past alive, one pressing at a time.
Our thanks to Poppleton Scouts, their leaders and everyone who picked, pressed and tasted.
