EVENTS COMING SOON

  • Tithe Barn Ceilidh & Burns Night

Celebrate the spirit of Scotland at our annual Burns Night Supper & Ceilidh—a convivial evening of food, poetry, music, and dance in the historic and atmospheric surroundings of the Nether Poppleton Tithe Barn.

    A Night to Remember

On a crisp January evening, the barn is transformed with warm lighting, tartan accents, and Scottish flair. Guests arrive to a traditional reception, often including a dram of whisky or mulled drink to toast the evening.

    The Supper

The heart of the event is the Burns Supper: guests enjoy a carefully prepared meal featuring classic Scottish fare such as haggis, neeps and tatties (with vegetarian or alternative options available), followed by a dessert that may include a nod to Scotch (e.g. whisky-infused elements). Throughout the meal, we interweave traditional elements of a Burns Night programme:

Address to the Haggis — the stirring recitation and ceremonial cutting

Immortal Memory & Toasts — speeches celebrating Robert Burns, poetry readings, and occasional local reflections

Bagpipe or musical interludes, as appropriate, to punctuate the evening

    The Ceilidh

After supper, the Barn comes alive with dance. A ceilidh band leads the festivities, calling traditional Scottish dances—jigs, reels, strathspeys—and encouraging everyone to join in. No previous experience is needed; the caller guides participants step by step, making it accessible to seasoned dancers and newcomers alike.
